				5/23/2005: Train collision in India
There were a lot of these shots circulating, and someone might have even sent one along, but none were so compelling until the WaPo had this version of it over the weekend. This was a train collision in which 17 people were killed and 70 injured. But the odd thing about it is how all the people standing there, are just giving the ol hairy eyeball to it all, watching the whole thing proceed! Maybe they first climbed up to help, but all that can be done is to carry out the hurt. Around these parts, someone would take charge and move out the onlookers in case someone else gets hurt. Or another train arrives on scene to worsen the crash. |

Careful, next thing you know you'll be accused of saying that there culture is inferior to ours.

Although their culture IS inferior to ours, this image reminds me of a familiar scene I see regularly here at home (in reference to government funded jobs). 77 people present and only 7 working.

Must not be worried about a fire breaking out. The Washington Post has the greatest pictures. It's a shame they haven't updated their "Day in Photos" page since April 20th.

You don't know what was happening when the photo was taken. Maybe they were told to stand back. Maybe the trains were unstable (hello! they'd just collided!) and to send more people down there would imbalance it even more, and then there'd be more people to save. Just a thought.

Just a thought. Possibly their culture is different from yours, not better or worse or special, just different.

I don't understand the word 'culture'. I understand 'humanity' and 'common sense' though. Any 'culture' that doesn't have this base nature at its root IS worse than a culture that does. Western culture IS worse than many. I don't know any Indians.

I'm sure their culture is better in some ways and worse in many more. I ate at an Indian restaurant last Sunday so nyahh. I had curried goat. It wasn't very good. I like some Indian food very much, but I don't like the practice of overspicing meat until it can't be identified. |

I thought they did that because it traditionally hangs outside and rots and has fly eggs all over it, so they spice to cover the taste of the spoilage. That's not a racial comment, btw. My race eats haggis, so I can comment on nasty food.

That's why spices have historically been such a valuable commodity - no refrigeration. It's also why food gets blander the further north you go.
