It's North of the South part. Texas is bigger than Afghanistan; as large as all of New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and North Carolina combined. It's about 800 miles from top to bottom, and almost as much from side to side (so, yes, we have East and West in Texas, too).
North Texas commonly refers to the Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) Metroplex, which has a population of 6 million and is larger in area than Rhode Island.
