It's not like Chico can actually see the puppet when he's eating, so I think "stinky hands" is probable. Though it is difficult to imagine a hippo with a persnickety palate.

Its a hippo? How many carrots do you need to feed it in a day? I don't know if there are enough hours in a day to hand feed the monster.

i think that's a good hippo-thesis.

Although if it came attached to a pack of laundry powder it might smell a bit nasty itself.
