I bought a baby hamster from a (reputable) pet store once, could see myself doing the same for fish/snakes/lizards. Dogs and cats we've always rescued/adopted. The dogs/cats at Petsmart are from a local animal rescue group, Petsmart provides a convenient place for the animals to be shown to the public for adoption, but the shelter they are from usually handle their care.
