But you are making the assumption that the grass is green even though you personally have never seen it. You want the grass to be green so you will take statements saying 'the grass is green' as more valid than statements saying 'the grass isn't as green as you think'.


Politics is largely an act and politicians will say, within certain constraints, what is needed to get votes. It makes perfect sense for Republican candidates to take socially conservative stances because that is the only way they will get elected. Ask John Huntsman how well the socially liberal economically conservative stance went for him. Look how Romney's views drastically changed since he was governor of Massachusetts.

The media then focuses on the extreme viewpoints that will get an emotional reaction out of viewers ('This politician is nuts!' type response) because they get higher ratings. Then, the politicians can either disregard those allegations (Obama) or embrace them (Republican candidates) depending on whether they believe it will help them or not.


To get to the point, the Republican candidates are not as crazy as the are portrayed because only their extreme views are only ones that get attention. Personally I would never vote for them but I don't believe they are as stupid as they come off to be.
