What kind of frosting is it? As Ortho said, if there's real cream in the frosting, refrigerate. I had once decorated with real buttercream frosting(homemade not the Duncan Hines) and left the cake outside for 3, 4 hours. Still edible.
 But I did put it in the fridge later. You can leave Duncan Hines and Pillsbury frosting outside without any problem.
