I thought the fact that it shot out the darts/wires, is what made a Taser a taser. I mean that's what separated it from the dozens of other electrical gizmos that will knock you down but require up close and personal contact.
The plasma lines would be an order of magnitude leap, if they will go through a chainlink fence and wind/strong draft. Maybe even reflect them off a plate glass window or mirror.

(I did like the bits with the firefighters, though. But then I like pretty damn much anything with firefighters.)
