Well folks I have come to a decision, tomorrow I am going to confront the person responsible for the damage to my cars, and tell them that have until 5PM to give me $5,000.00 to pay for my losses or I will go to the Police. I want cash money no checks, I am sick and tired of paying for other peoples fuck ups. What do you think?

IIRC, that may be illegal- considered extortion. I'm not a lawyer, so I can't really go any further than that. Shawnee's link is prior to a lawsuit, not a criminal charge, so the law may be different in that case.

I don't see how telling someone to pay you, what you think they owe you, or you'll pursue legal options, could be considered extortion? On the contrary, it would be proper to give them the option.

Yesterday I called the police and dropped the matter. they were happy to oblige. When my X-boss showed up and had me change the fuel filter on his Honda ruckus, I just wimped out he ask me if I had called the cops when I told him yes, he started yelling at me and said I could ruin his political career, and if hurt him in his run for city council he would sue me. I guess it is true that money talks, bullshit walks, and chump change rides the bus. So I get to ride the bus.

Technically it could be considered blackmail- "give me money or I will expose your criminal act". I think the idea is that if there's an actual crime, you should call the cops no matter what. Cops might be happy if you spare them the work, but cops don't write the laws. And the guy sounds like a vindictive asshole, so it would be best not to leave him an opening.

Fortunately for me the person in question can. When I told my X-boss that we were moving both my new truck and my car quit, and I found evidence of pulverized lime stone in the master cylinder of my car, and the transmission of my truck. this is already in the possession of the Police. The cops would like this matter to go away.

Suggestion? Write a letter of demand. Guidelines here. If it prompts a response, great. If it ends up in court, the judge likes to see that you made a legal, nonconfrontational attempt to collect, and will look favorably upon that.
Oh, and send the letter certified, for proof it was received.
