Never had Shoneys here. We can't even stop Burger King and Ponderosa from shutting down.

Nope.
No Shoneys, no IHOP, no Dennys, no White City, no Taco Bell etc etc etc

We got McDonalds, Burger King and KFC. Oh and Wendys
And Pizza Hut and Dominos.
And Subway.

I don't think you guys export the good stuff.
We did have Wimpy though. Which Bill Bryson found highly amusing in its posturing as an American style burger bar which got it all wrong.
It had table service on proper plates with knives and forks, and vinegar on the tables (McDonalds caused a stir when they opened - what, no vinegar on my chips?!" But they did serve Coke Floats and Knickerbocker Glories. Which were the height of sophistication to a child who'd only ever eaten out in Woolworth's Cafe before.

And GBK. Which I think is Antipodean.
Our antipodes of course, not yours.

Shoney's reminds me of my grandparents. I think they got grits and Sanka there...

I'd kill any of you for a local Denny's.

The Save the kiwi tab on their website would support that ....and on that page, i noticed the tomato-shaped ketchup bottle and realised I haven't seen one of those since I left the UK -the treademark of caffs too cheap to serve Heinz ketchup but would like to be seen as more upmarket/family oriented that a roadside greasy spoon.

I and one or the other of the 'rents eat at Cracker Barrel once or twice a week. I've never been offered grits with anything but breakfast-type meals (I like 'em, btw). Maybe it's a regional thing?

Anyone else ever eaten at a King's Table? (buffet-style place)

Grits are like rice, just something to carry better tasting stuff to your mouth.

There used to be a Shoney's in Essington. Took the family there once for Sunday brunch buffet. I thought it sucked. Bruce, did ou ever eat there? It might have been right next to the Red Roof Inn.

I don't order anything but breakfasts (why go, otherwise?), so that may explain my experience.

I am not safe in buffet restaurants. I have no sense of scale, and only determine fullness after the point of no return. Or rather, greater likelihood of rapid return. Sorry if anyone was eating while they read that.

Bob's Big Boy chain went bankrupt in 2000.

Quote:
Following the bankruptcy, the chain was sold to investor Robert Liggett, Jr., who took over as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), renamed the company Big Boy Restaurants International and kept the headquarters in Warren. The company is the franchisor for more than 455 Big Boy restaurants in the United States and Canada.
Quote:
Frisch's (Ohio, Kentucky, S. Indiana, Florida until the early 1990s) the Cincinnati restaurant chain and first franchisee, began serving Big Boy hamburgers in 1946; Frisch's now operates 88 Big Boys & franchises 32 Big Boys to others. They also franchise Golden Corrals in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky.
Quote:
Shoney's (Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, West Virginia, Ohio, Missouri, Maryland), founded by and named after Alex Schoenbaum, no longer displays the Big Boy Statue, because it dropped its relationship with Big Boy in 1984 in order to expand to other states where others owned the trademark. It was the second Big Boy franchisee and subfranchised to Elby's and Lendy's.

No, you're cool Buster. I've seen Bob's, Shoney's, and Abdow's Big Boys.

X-Lydia would no doubt shoot back; she regards Denny's as not necessarily food nor necessarily entertainment... though she can be persuaded to go there after hours IF she's actually hungry enough.

I take a less rigid approach about these things -- for I still like their Ultimate Omelette.

We lived for some years in Annapolis. The Annapolis Denny's was the one that refused to serve that group of black FBI men one night, and brother did they find trouble. There was something wrong about that Denny's somehow anyway... the place never felt like it had any pride. I've never run across another that had such a bad vibe.

X-Lydia's not a burger fiend, either. Her favorite fast foot joint is Wendy's, or Chick-fil-A.
