In my experience, someone who comes around all the time pestering the manager for a position that isn't open yet is just going to annoy them. It's all in how you approach them about it, though.

moderation in all things. its good to let the manager know youre interested in the position. bad to let them know youre psychotic. its a fine line but assuming sycamore is sane, he shouldnt have a problem following up.
