Friday's show was most excellent...I'd put it in the top 3 Reverend shows I've ever seen. The Rev never puts on a bad show, mind you...but this one was mighty good.

The show was at the Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia's Chinatown. The Troc is one of the "major" small venues in town: an old school theatre with a standing only downstairs and a seated balcony...probably holds about 2000 or so. Nice venue overall...my only real complaint was the lack of A/C, b/c it got pretty warm in there. Rho and I watched from the balcony: good sight lines, could see everything, padded benches, smoking only allowed in the balcony bar.

Throw Rag opened the show, with the lead singer wearing some cheesy ass "yacht captain" outfit. They call their style of music "sailor rock": basically a combination of hillybilly, punk, and rock, with more emphasis on the rock aspect. They also feature a guy that plays the washboard, cowbells, and bugle. (They could get HIM to play at military funerals.) He took his shirt off halfway through the set (and he was one of those guys that probably shouldn't do so) and then did some phallic things with the bugle at the end of the set. Crazy shit, but good set. Check out mp3.com for some free downloads from them.

Southern Culture on the Skids played next, and put on one hell of a set. Their style is more like the Reverend, though with more of a Southern feel...they've been around for over a decade now. Lots of energy, lots of guitar licks, and fried chicken for the crowd.

(I had never seen them before this weekend, but apparently, part of their show involves bringing girls up on stage, breaking out a box of fried chicken, having them eat some of it, then throwing the rest out to the crowd...all while playing their song "Fried Chicken and Gasoline".)

Then, around 11 or so, the Good Reverend came out to save the souls of the crowd. Decked out in a green suit with purple flames, he started the set with "Reverend Horton Heat's Big Blue Car" and played non-stop for about 45 minutes. Then he got to talking a little...he talked about how bassist Jimbo Wallace kinda looks like Michael Landon...and Eric McCormack from Will & Grace. During this, someone yelled "Fuck Michael Landon!", which caused Jimbo to go into a joking rant about the greatness of Michael Landon. He played for another 45 minutes or so, taking most of his set list from 2002's Lucky 7 and 1994's Liquor in the Front.

The crowd, mostly 20 and 30-somethings, started off pretty mellow. Everyone was in pretty good spirits, but just seemed a bit quiet--maybe they were just in awe of the awesome spectacle before us. The crowd pepped up after the Michael Landon speech, and started moshing to the proceeding tune, "Jimbo Song." We unfortunately could not stay for the encore (which usually lasts another 15 or so minutes).

So, in conclusion, it rocked the fuck out and a good time was had by all. The end.

As I mentioned, the Reverend never puts on a bad show. But the best way to sum up this show--and evening--is "bizarre"...though it really wasn't the Rev's doing.

Throw Rag did another great set. The washboard guy was nutty again, though the audience participant didn't seem to enjoy her part in the festivities.

Apparently, the band brings a fan on stage every night to play the washboard in one of their songs. The washboard guy then proceeds to practically molest the fan. The gal they picked Friday in Philadelphia seemed to have a great time. She had been going crazy down on the ground level during their set, so I imagine she was only too happy to jump up on stage. But the gal picked last night acted like she didn't want to be up there. And it's not like they just pick someone at random...they pick a volunteer from the crowd. I guess she didn't know what she was in for.

SCOTS did a great set as well. In addition to offering the crowd fried chicken, they gave out banana pudding--no throwing of that though...thank God.

The Reverend put on another solid set, although it wasn't as tight as Friday's. The sound board guy should have been taken out back and given an ass beating--he completely fucked up the sound of the show. During the opening song, the bass was so loud, it made my whole body vibrate. And I was about 50 or so feet from the stage. And though they toned the bass down, they just didn't get the sound quite right. And the Rev sounded like his guitar needed some tuning halfway through the set--that, or he was just smashed out of his mind.

The crowd...oh fucking hell...what a mess.

More older people at this show...a bunch of 'em. And a bunch of drunks. Maybe I didn't notice it as much Friday b/c Rho and I weren't that close to the bar, but God damn...this one guy must have been up there at least 3 or 4 times in one hour. Dave and I just happened to be standing by the end of one of the bars--about 50 feet from the stage.

During SCOTS, this one gal is practically rubbing up against me. And her dumb boyfriend is in front of me, trying to dance around, and bumping into me. So, at the end of their final song, I screamed a loud "Whoooooo!" right into his left ear...shortly thereafter, they moved away from us.

Before the beginning of the Rev's set, this one group of guys decided to stand right in front of us. And they just came across as 100% USDA assholes. Especially this one guy. He had bought a Rev shirt and was trying to put it on--and he was just hammered. He's all falling over and shit, bumping into me and smelling like a brewery, barely able to hold on to his drink or his cigarette. I was quite surprised that the staff didn't cut him off, given that he was visibly inebriated. *shrugs*

During the encore, Dave and I were hanging out in the back, near a woman who was visibly moved by the good Reverend. During the last song, she starts hanging all over her boyfriend, and the two of them start to dry hump in front of the sound board.

Add to that the fact that you practically had to knock people down just to move 2 feet b/c none of them wanted to move. And it's not like they didn't have room to move...it wasn't THAT packed.

Then, there was the weird shit AFTER the show...

Dave and I are rolling down 14th St. NW, and it's just after 2am. All we want to do is turn onto K St. to head towards I-66 and Dave's place. But traffic is going nowhere--we sit through 2 traffic lights without moving. Apparently, a bunch of people were trying to turn into the inner drive on K St., but the people that were already there didn't want to move.

So, we finally get down to K St., and we're waiting for the light to turn green. And what do we see walking down our side of the street? Two hookers: The one looked like she was 12; the other was wearing this see through lace dress with a thong on, her big ass apparent to everyone around. We saw what appeared to be a third one sitting in Farragut Square...it was either a hooker or a bum...we couldn't tell.

So, good show, crappy sound, stupid people, strange night. The end. :p

Between the strange downpours in Philadelphia and the traffic everywhere else...good thing I was in a good mood and had good tunes with me.

Yikes! Night #2 sounds like one I would not enjoy,... although there was pudding. Obnoxious drunks.

I've heard complaints about DC crowds before from the Mr.- I believe they were described as "the drunken spawn of the ruling class". Sounds like these drunks were a bit older though.

Glad night #1 was better.

My bad...the song is actually "Eight Piece Box." And they played "Banana Puddin'" during the pudding handout.

I don't want to make a decision on DC fans as a whole, b/c I've only been to 2 shows there, and they were both Reverend shows. Given the Reverend's background and the type of music he plays, assholes are drawn to him like moths to a flame. Rho says her experiences there have been pretty decent (Morrissey, Prince, Depeche Mode) in DC.

Having been to 4 shows here in Philadelphia, I can say with confidence that the fans are cool, but kinda lame (i.e. lack of participation). St. Louis and Chicago fans are pretty cool...they're rather lively bunches.

And don't get me wrong...it WAS a good show. I ain't gonna let any fuckheads take away from that. In fact, the first ever Rev show I went to featured a bunch of college-aged dirtnuts (Columbia, MO, 12/1/95). Fuck them.

Well, I would imagine he'll be back around in the spring. Last I read, he's off to Europe soon, then they're going to record a new CD. He was here last year, but before that, it was 2 years ago. I just got so spoiled that first year...saw him 5 times between December 1995 and October 1996.

SCOTS' new CD comes out January 27th. I imagine they'll be doing a big tour again shortly (the current one ends in November).

I'm a big fan of theirs now--especially after listening to Dirt Track Date and Plastic Seat Sweat today. Although, they're much better live than on CD.
