Britain has just had the warmest year on record. I was pleased to hear it actually, as I've been complaining about how warm it was all year, and have met with baffled looks from my colleagues.
Of course it's bad news for the future if this isn't a random blip. Perhaps I should start learning Icelandic...

Apart from the obvious fucking up of the ecosystem, we aren't really living in a more apocolyptic world now, than we did a hundred, a thousand or ten thousand years ago.
There have always been people living in the face of danger and disaster, we've had ice ages, mini ice ages, continental shifts, great waves and whole cities buried under flowing lava. They aren't signs of a coming messiah. It's possible that we have done enough damage in the last hundred years or so, to the earth's natural systems that we genuinely face true destruction.....but it's not the rapture, neither is the wolf swallowing the sun, nor is this destruction part of a larger and ineffable plan. It's stuff thats happening. there has always been stuff happening, and if our grandchildren have not been robbed of a healthy world to live in, by our excess, then stuff will continue to happen. |

My dad keeps predicting the apolcolypse or some other non-religious end of the world type scenario. So far there's been three or four non-events and we're all still living.
The last time he started up about it was about 3 months before Dazza and I got married. My response was, "as long as I get to be married to Dazza, I don't give a shit". We're still alive, and maybe the world will end some time, but I pretty much don't care either way as long as I'm happy with the way I live my life and I've lived a good life. I'm sure Dad will tell us on Christmas day that 2007 is the year it'll all end, but that's ok. As long as he's got something to worry about he'll be happy. I don't have to believe him, and he doesn't have to care if I don't. ![]()

I have a gut feeling that the enviro-apocalypse crowd's brains are being tickled the same way the the end o' the world religious nuts are. It is some hard wired thing from our ancestor's need to be vigilant for large mammals who wanted to eat them.
edit : it is unfortunate that some end o' timers have access to bombs and armies, though.

Yer, apocalypse scenarios are built into the human brain somehow; stories of belief in them are found all over history.
