Symantec blocks NRA sites
This taken from Slashdot
"A recent American Rifleman contained small column that said that Symantec's new Internet Security 2004 would block pro gun rights sites (i.e. NRA sites), while not blocking similar anti-gun rights web sites. Being the eternal skeptic, this claim was tested by downloading the trial version and running some tests against it. To my surprise I found the every NRA site was blocked and was in the category 'weapons.' This even included the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action. Some sites that were not blocked where such notable anti-gun rights site such as The Brady Campaign, and Good Bye Guns. The only anti-gun rights site that was blocked that I could find was Hand Gun Control's web site." I'm going to look into this a bit more . . . but if it's true, I won't be using/buying anything from Symantec anymore. |

Nearly everything posted by Slashdot is either misleading, partially wrong, or completely wrong. I will no more go through the cycle of getting all up in arms over something, then after checking Slashdot's sources, finding out it's not true,

Ahh come on the slashdot poster SAID he verified it himself with a demo copy. And instapundit.com picked it up too. How much proof do you need anyway????
Oh, sorry, hmm..... looks like I'm in a bit of a cynical mood today. |

Great, Symantec is anti-rights, and McAfee fucks up my computer.
What's a girl to do?

Anti-rights? Give me a break. If it were blocking porn and didn't block anti-porn sites would anyone care? I doubt it.
It's being blocked under a "weapons" category. Anti-gun sites shouldn't be showing how cool guns are, like pro-gun sites do, quite well actually. If there's a "weapons" category then this follows logic. It's places like schools that would have that up, and they're freaking out about anything to do with guns right now. That's probably the only reason it even has a "weapons" category. Also, I'm sure you can disable the category. It'd be stupid not to. Plus, this is only if this highly doubtful source is accurate.

It's free for home use, and I don't know what kind of hardware yoiu're running, but my old 233MHz MMX started running twice as fast when I kicked McAfee's bloated carcass off and started running this. |

I doubt Symantec would release a product that doesn't allow control over which sites it bans. Now, that may well be a default setting, but it IS something you can change.

Strangely, that is a problem I never encountered with McAfee. I solved all the other ones in the way which I will recommend to you ... uninstall McAfee.

Anyone ever try Avast Antivirus? Free for home use, seems to have all the bells and whistles.
Of course, using it means that you won't need to pirate Symantec products anymore, but you could always steal their stuff and then give it away.
