Yeah...that'sa bit of a historical myth I'm afraid. There were 'redcoats'. But there were also green coats. The 95th Rifles, for example wore green and several battalions wore ranger style uniforms.

Let's not quibble about colors, the main point being differences in what was considered "cricket" on the battlefield. Anyway, I learned history in the US so I can pretty much assume that 90% of what I was taught was patent fabrication while the other 10% was merely erroneous.

What's awesome is the Russians are gung ho for getting back into Anotherstanisstan after we Gringos abandon it for our next bit of nonsense in the Democratic Republic of North Cyriran.

Interesting. That would be awesome. Can we just hand it over to them and step out?

Ha!

Fair enough. But: for the record, that kind of elegant warfare approach was reserved strictly for fighting other big European nations *grins*

The guerilla skills were definately something the army wasn't used to fighting. Although they did have some experience in less standard fighting tactics, that experience had been a generation earlier. Pretty much standard experience for the british army during this period was recruitment during conflict and near total disbandment during peace time. Consequently, when a new conflict arose, they had to learn to fight as an army all over again. Every time.

Indeed. I am not exactly in the sunniest of moods, thanks in part to a recent cascade of unpleasant events - one right after the other. For some reason, Orthodoc's post felt like the last straw. But the person actually deserving of my wrath is not Orthodoc.

@ Orthodoc I apologize for my extremely bitchy and frustrated post. I was wrong to make you a scape goat for all the anger I've been feeling toward the Montezuma County Housing Authority among others. You were an innocent by-stander when that IED exploded. Sorry.

It's okay, Sam. Sorry to hear that so many things are combining to make life miserable right now.

And hire 30,000 Hessians.

By the way, the Queen is cutting back too. She's only getting a £5 million raise this year.

True, the redcoats were garrison troops. But there were British troops that were blooded during the French and Indian War. Of course a lot of them were colonists.

One of the definitive written pieces on irregular warfare, Robert's Rules of Ranging was written for the British by Robert Rogers as an officer in the British army. If he hadn't completely f***d up his life, he would have served one side or other well during the Revolutionary War.

Oh that's really interesting, thanks Rich!

My knowledge of those wars isn't great. I know odds and sods, but I know more about the Penninsular Wars.
