You ever stick your finger in a cats mouth like when giving a pill? All soft inside. I imagine the tongue quills fold down inside the mouth. Anyone know for sure?

Found in my Dad's desk.

The circle in the center turns/rotates.
The angles on the bottom corners are 75 and 68 degrees.

That's a really cool item. I googled it and the proper term for it is "Ames Guide". It's for calligraphy and drafting and art - here's a video explaining it

I tried searching for the names on it and didn't find much useful. I bow to your superior googleFu.
Now to see what eBay says! lol

Let me save you folks seven minutes of your life that you WILL want back.

7 minutes = It's for drawing lines.

Something alive and actively growing. Looks fungal. Bread yeast, maybe?

Carved out of ivory?

Occasionally, similarly carved ivory objects turn up on the Antiques Roadshow which explains my line of thought.

Probably missed by a country mile.

ETA If I'm allowed a second go, I'll say it's coral.

I'd say that coral might be close enough but those little critters have got to be chalk or some other powdery fossilised rock. No?
