The greatest legacy your father has left are the principles and morals that are within his children. Take comfort in knowing he was loved and respected by many and that he still lives on in you and yours. My sincerest condolences to your entire family.

Thank you all for your condolences. I'm still in a state of mild shock. The memorial is planned for the 8th.

We're hoping it will be a fitting tribute. There have been a lot of the typical family shenanigans, worthy of posting at a later date.

Trying to stay focused on the right things.

I'll be scarce for a while, but thanks for your thoughts.

PS try not to post too many interesting things while I'm gone so there is less for me to catch up on.

Don't know how I missed this thread.

I enjoyed reading your tribute to your dad. It was good of you to share that with everyone.

Based on your tribute, I hereby nominate footfootfoot's dad as an honorary Cellarite. It would have been a pleasure to meet him and it sounds like we all could have learned a lot from him. And that picture is priceless.

Don't despair about not knowing enough about your Dad - the really good ones don't boast about their good deeds. He looks a sincere and friendly man just from the photo (the hair was part of the hat, wasn't it?).

I found it difficult to get my father to speak about his WW2 experiences. I later learned that he spent time in Burma and was captured. Now I can appreciate that most soldiers prefer to forget what they have seen and experienced from that time.

Not easy to know he's gone, but, even though they mey be few, the memories he has left you are beautiful treasures.

Usually the only way to get a handle on war stories is by fading into the woodwork when they commiserate with a fellow vet. When I was a kid in the late 40's/early 50's, I had many opportunities do just that with WW II vets.
Never caught my old man though, he was always aware of me being around.
