That he made reference to them being strung up however, is a step beyond that. That he makes reference to them being so much braver now (as opposed to back then when they were presumably kept in a state of fear, the clear implication being that that was a better state of affairs) is a step beyond.

He totally overreacted. It was horrible to watch. And I concede that would those particular comments come from just nowhere? In some ways I think no way...you would have to have some deep rooted racist beliefs for those words to come out of your mouth.

But I know in anger I have said some horrible things, things that made me sick even as I said them (not racist things, but still bad things)...and wished for all the world I could take them back...but those incidents were bourne of confusion, hurt, anger, defenselessness, or whatever equally horrible emotions I felt at the time. People strike out in ways that I think scares even themselves; where did that person come from?

I just hope everyone gets beyond this issue. When the media frenzy dies down, are we going to care what Michael Richards really believes? Did we care before? No.

Oh I totally agree. We are after all only human and as such capable of surprising ourselves at times, in unpleasant ways. I don't necessairly think this means he is a dyed in the wool racist. But it does suggest he harbours at some level a racist consciousness.

It'll die down. We have a saying in the UK....today's newspaper is tomorrow's chip paper.

Mel "Sugar Tits" Gibson at least said something funny, and he's not even a comedian.

Richards was like an overwhelmed dog backed into a corner. Even the manic pacing. He didnt have the comic chops. And unfortunately this is the era of the video clip. Cringe. The Hick's riff is a great contrast.

Still. Kramer is funny.

Hicks was funny. I saw him live in Manchester about 18 months before he died. He was awesome.

I understand how Richard felt when he was heckled and it would have been the same if it had been any other race that heckled him. He was hurt, belittled and humiliated and he did what come natural for some people and that is to hurt, belittle and humiliate back and that is what he did.
You do not have to prejudice or a racist to lash out with racial slurs when angered.
I have heard Blacks who in anger hurl racist slurs like the “N” word at each other and it is not about race at all but about hurting the other person.
I have heard Whites, Hispanics and Native American, in anger, hurl racial slurs at their peers. Anger does not bring out real feelings but bring out words designed specifically to hurt, and hurt the most and racial slurs does just that.
A real racist use this language against other races in every day language and not in anger but in hate.
When people are hurt they lash out to hurt, simple as that.
I believe too much has been read into what Richard’s intentions.
Blacks sue the word against other Blacks to belittle because it is a belittling words used against them by whites, etc to belittle.
I have heard Black parents use the word in anger against their children and if any Black parent deny it they are lying.
I am a Native American raised by a Black family in a mostly Black neighborhood and Black kids used it against each other in anger.
It is not a word of endearment among Blacks and the work should never be use by Blacks on Black.
