I've found when doing presentations at University that being a mature student helps. I get the impression that the younger students find it much more daunting to impose themselves onto a space. I agree, I use to teach a bit every year and it always gets easier over time. I never had much problem with it due to some early exposure to community playhouse and high school productions/competitive speech classes. Some people have a knack for it, some do not. Just hang in there and it should improve over time Juniper.
