IMHO you will appreciate the extra aperture more than you will different focal lengths.

Thanks everyone for all the advice.

I ended up taking the 18-70, and I think it was the right choice. I used the wide end more than the zoom, particularly in places like Jack Kerouac alley and Chinatown where there's no room to back up to get the shot.

My wife had her camera, also, though we tend to take different types of pictures.

We did a lot of walking every day, but we didn't make it to Alcatraz. Our hotel, the Villa Florence, is on Powell, just a block or so from Union Square, and the cable cars ran right in front of our window.
