Oh I dunno if I can put the great Nick Lowe to the examination...! Let me try.

All I feel is joy at the song, every time I've heard it.

Half the job of the drums is given to the rhythm guitar.

Half of the job of the lead guitar is given to the bass. Which of course I love!

Half the job of the lead vocals is given to the piano, which sounds authentically like a console piano. The piano is not used as a piano. It's used as a prop! Zing! Zap!

Nick Lowe is known for "pub rock" - at first, music that is as natural and immediate as punk, but not angry. But even as it's immediate, there is technique to it, there is chops, and that's what makes it great for me. Better than good, GREAT. Nick Lowe and Declan MacManus and the whole bunch required a lot of musicianship to get to what they were. As well as a lot of gin and tonics.

I wish I could sense these things. I just love the song and am fascinated by the way it seems to change rhythm or beat or whatever.

Nick Lowe's music really holds up to the test of time for me. There's so much good stuff from Marie Provost to 36" High (not surprisingly, a favorite)
