i just think right is right, zip. and if you saw the error, you should have been the one to point it out. That, from a purely ethical position. In the REAL world, the dealer made the mistake. The Finance Manager that did your paperwork, or the Sales Manager that signed the buyers order will endure a tongue lashing, and a mark in the memory of the GSM or GM or Dealer Principle, and they'll move on. You have to wonder if the dealer made that $500 on the sale of the car. Probably, but not definitely.

You said, yourself that you had the money set aside. This tells me that you knew keeping it was wrong.

I agree that a dealer that even has a collections department or "collections girl" must have some issues, and the treatment you received on the phone was unacceptable. But if you don't like the way a business treats you, you stop patronizing it, tell your friends to avoid them, or, if it's really bad, you write the BBB, or picket the freaking place, but you don't steal from them.

The Sales Manager that called you and offer to waive the nickel for a good survey ( what does that cost you, really?)(and don't say "it's wrong to lie"), and you agreed. So you kept the $500 and put it good use, I'm sure. Then you went back on your word and hammered them on the survey anyway. As far as I see it, you now owe them $500 again. You broke the deal. Pay up.

It might even be worth the $500 to you to be able to walk into the dealership, hand the salesmanager a check, and tell him that your morals are worth more than $500, and you decided not to lie on the survey.

hey, the dealership screwed up. it's not fair to harrass him after they screwed up, but at least he could have given them a good survey for the $500 "discount" and maybe made a note like "except for the collections woman".

Jimbo,
My inital reaction to your extended reply was,
FUCK YOU !!! YOU SUIT WEARING DESK SITTING PENCIL PUSHING MOTHER FUCKER !!! I HOPE YOU HAVE AN ALERGIC REACTION TO YOUR HAIR GEL AND ALL YOUR HAIR FALLS OUT !! NOW HAVE A NICE FUCKING DAY !!!!!

But i try not to post in anger .
I can see your point , BUT the owner of the place was the one to suggest eating the money .
We went in to the dealership knowing what we wanted , the sales dude tryed to push ALL kinds of options off on us , no we don't want the electric windows , they die and are expencive to fix , no we don't want the leather seats ( ever sat on a HOT leather seat in the summer in shorts ) , no we don't want the $3000+ fancy paint job with the fake wood trim , blue will do quite nicely . We DO want a sturdey luggage rack on top though . Dip shit just put those cheesy little plastic strips on the roof , and charged us $200 extra , they blew off after 2 months .
I say again if all these folks had treated us with ANY dignaty we would have worked with them gladly , hell we were going to pay them the $500 any way ( just sweating them for being such dick heads ) until the owner called and suggested eating the money . we just said sure . Now we didn't SLAM them on the survey , just didn't lie and give them golden stars where they didn't earn them .
I know you are going to have some else to say on this , but let me just say this is an issue that both of us are going to have to agree to disagree on.

Have a nice day

my first reaction to THIS was . Oh .....my....god. .....only one misspelled word.

He must be pissed.

whatever, zip. I don't think any less of you for it. And it really wasn't that big of a deal. $500 means a lot less to a dealer than it does to you. I've had things rung up wrong in my favor and not said anything, too. I was being a little high and mighty, maybe. If you feel like you did the right thing, then that's fine by me.

You greasy, chain wallet wearing, sociopathic, bipolar, misfit. Get back under the pick up truck you live in with the rest of your 15 brothers and sisters that got evicted from the trailer with you.

He's out of control. There's nothing I can do.... he's at work 12 hours a day and needs less sleep than I do.
