I can attest to this, as there are about eight thousand little black eyes staring at me at any given time...

He's been gone over a month. Syc and I were just talking about that - where are you, Hubris Boy?

Not always true at all levels. For the superfical things and decisions, yes.

But, speaking from personal experience and that of friends, in Silicon Valley, the more attractive women are thought of (or at least treated) as less technically capable. I guess it's the "bimbo syndrome." The thought that you can't possibly be intelligent AND cute.

To some degree, it's also true for men. Some geeks don't see an attractive guy as a TRUE geek -- and, therefore not as technically competent.

But there is no question that, even in Sillycon Valley, when an attractive woman is seen at a meeting or a convention, the thoughts seem to be (in order):

(a) She's a marketing drone
(b) She's here because her boyfriend dragged her along
(c) She's in tech support
(d) She's a competent developer.

Falling into category (d) (at least, in my opinion), there were many times that I found the presumption rather annoying!

Interesting

That would be a real shame, if someone would see a stunning female and instantly assume she has nothing to do with anything technical.

I was going to write this a few postings back, and held off. Please bear with me...

I was speaking from experience. I'm a thirty-something man, a competent developer myself, and very handsome from what people tell me. I am also white, if that unfortunately adds anything to the mix.

I find that in my interactions with others, I seem to just get lucky, real lucky sometimes, and I wonder how. How did I get my job over a stack of 30 other applicants? Why did that cop just let me go without a ticket, when I clearly deserved one? Why did that babe come up and start talking to me out of the blue? Why was my loan approved at a ridiculously low rate, when (I snuck a look at this) others the same day were half a point higher, with the female loan officer seeming so friendly? Why do I just seem to get away with things? And why do good-looking people, other males included, seem to make conversation so easily, and are so easily befriended?

I just guessed it was that in the two seconds you have to judge someone by their cover and decide "good guy or bad guy?", they say "good guy" when they see me. They then treat me better than they might otherwise.

Yeah, no kidding. I haven't seen him since before Thanksgiving. Damn, that almost gives me an idea. I should snag the pic of him from his site and post a "Have You Seen Me?" sorta deal.

Oh wow...completely forgot about that. A friend of mine is currently working full-time for his Uncle at one of the reservist bases in Maryland. He doesn't mind it, except for the fact that he had to pull out of his college classes for the semester.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Hello Kitty has those little black staring eyes on a white backdrop. It's distracting. I have enough problems without being stared at by inanimate objects.
