My microwave walls have three different vents in them - besides, when alcohol boils and vaporizes, it creates pressure inside the unit so the alcohol vapor is bound to find its way inside the unit itself.

um......do you fail to see the link between these two sentences?

I take it that you should declare the kitchen as a no smoking zone while you're doing this, whether it's on the stove or with a nuke-a-matic? And what if you have a gas range?

I'd like to say it was always that pratical.

There are a few factors to keep in mind here. Firstly, the autoignition point of ethanol is over 300c is the first. The second is that the effective concentration is most likely under 30%. The third is you're not doing it for very long at all (<10) and the fourth is that you're not doing it with tens of litres, you're not opening the door and getting a gigantic cloud of pure ethanol vapour here people. Sensible? Heck no but in the scheme of things, *shrugs*.

I microwave Everclear (190 proof) to make Jello. Never had a problem...and always rather enjoyed the process.
