Speed cameras are all the rage here, because the revenue of the fine more than pays for the cost of running it. Hence they have multiplied like rabbits.
It has (from my observations) greatly reduced the kind of "10-15% over" speeding that used to be normal. A few particularly bad corners have permanent cameras with multiple warnings before and after the corner ..."YOUR SPEED WILL BE CHECKED" etc... I guess the local cops got tired of coming out to the same corner over and over. The road toll is roughly steady, maybe falling slightly, but kilometers driven per year is climbing with population, so I guess the overall formula is working.

These cameras are set up through outside contractors. They are a money making machine. The vast majority of the money goes to the company who installed and maintains the equipment. The "police" typically get just the fine/penalty amount.

There are separate cameras that are installed through the DOT, these are usually viewable online and maintain the departments ability to see whats going on at different locations. This reduces the need for manpower and gives instant feedback. They are also used to track traffic flow and can be used to locate particular trouble spots.

There are also people who go around and disable/vandalize red-light cameras and photoradar cameras.
The internet lists known locations and I see that in England setting them on fire with an old tire seems to be popular. Or so claims the internet.

Not popular. The general consensus would probably be to get rid of the cameras (they don't bother me - I don't break the law) but vandalism is frowned on in this generally conservative country. There is a vocal minority who are strongly opposed to them, but only the crimal part of them would consider damaging the cameras.
