You did not address the point that when Rush Limbaugh played it, the attention level was not as great.
You say it is a double standard and reject the racist part, so I give you a very logical alternative and you ignore it. Why is that?

I absolutely disagree with most of anything that comes out of Rush's mouth. They are all wrong to do it. But you can't say that it is not all a form of hate speech.

I think we are addressing two separate points. I am sticking to your double standard comment.
Quote:
So, I brought up the second aspect of why people are getting their panties in a bunch, the fact that it was said by a politician who wants to lead the Republican party. That counters your double standard argument because no anti-Bush statement was said by anyone of that stature in the Democratic party. I will back up that claim by saying that the same reaction was not produced when Palin rally supporters shouted "kill Obama" or when Rush Limbaugh played the "Barack the Magic Negro" song. I was not accusing you of agreeing with Rush Limbaugh unlike tw. So even though a racist comment, whether intention or not, will get more of reaction than "fuck Bush", the large reaction was produced by who actually said it, not the actual statement.

Any reaction in the first place was reporters building their narrative. In a crowd of tens of thousands, isolated voices are not worthy of news or our attention. If you disagree, I'll start pointing to comments sections of blogs of both the left and the right. |

I saw Steely Dan and this drunk lady was yelling "WE LOVE YOU, MR. FAGEN!" and I didn't feel that way.

I am responding to TheMercenary's argument that we have a double standard which was started with this article. Quote:

And now that I've read the context of the song, it's not actually racist! And this is a bunch of turd-throwing, as per usual.

Clearly when something like that is said/used by a frontline politician it's a little different to when its a rank and file party member, or constituent.
But...the outcry over the Palin rallies was huge. It filled UK news programmes, it was talked about on American chat shows and interview programmes, it sent ripples through the world. This hasn't. Not really. At the time, Merc was again arguing the double standard because of a Palin dummy that someone hung on halloween night. He is consistent. I disagree with his perspective on this, but his point is consistent and drawn from evidence here and in the world. These boards are full of anti-Bush and anti-Republican rhetoric. I happen to agree with it, and personally believe it is a better founded 'anti-' than the anti-Democratic, anti-Liberal rhetoric that also abounds here. We see the patterns that we discern from the mass, and that discernment is founded upon our own interests and proclivities. Consequently, we intermittently have dwellars convinced the Cellar is anti-atheist, anti-religion, anti-American, anti-European, anti-Bush, anti-Obama, anti- X, Y and Z. It is all of those things and none of them. |
