she's playing a PVC pipe. She's smacking the top of it with a floppy rubber paddle, kinda like a ping pong paddle.

Nope, and nope.
*ding* Time's up ... The correct answer is: Microphone Stand Which is why UT got closest with "performed into a metallic pipe-like thing and micd at the other end of that thing." He just missed the leap of illogic necessary for a wholly correct response. But I will hit the tip jar in honor of the effort. Actually, I'll hit the tip jar because I want to, the response is just a handy excuse.

Try something easier then... What beautiful, tasteful Brit singer/songwriter only found success after Eminem sampled one of her songs... many years after it was originally recorded?

Dido
But that song totally got airplay when it came out, at least around here... I was under the impression she was pretty successful before Eminem, though he definitely introduced her to a new demographic. Name the popular 60s musician who has since retired from music completely, and now teaches high-level math courses at a university in California. |

Zappa is, regrettably, deceased.

No, he's still teaching. Maybe not higher level math courses, though.

No, not Zappa.
And I've realized it's not entirely accurate to place him squarely in the sixties, so I wish to amend the clue to note that he was also popular in the late fifties, and mostly already retired by the late sixties. |

If I go to a "dead/not dead" website, would that be cheating?

This *is* a pop performer and not a novelty performer, right? We're not talking about Tom Lehrer, I am assuming?

You would be assuming wrong. I count Tom Lehrer as a fine musician! Elspode is correct...

Always check IotD -- Lehrer retired from teaching five years ago.

Crap, I hadn't realized that! I suck. At least you're not telling me he died, I'd be really upset then.
