He certainly was. I've been to a fair few live stand-up gigs, but his was frakking electric. Seriously edgy. We were there on press night, 'cause J's Dad was reviewing for The Guardian. Neither I nor J had even heard of the guy, we just bumped into Les in Manchester during an arts festival and he happened to be on his way to review Bill Hicks at the beer tent.

I went on a frenzy of Bill Hicks catchup (as well as I could without the glorious youtube to help) and was gutted when he died.

What's completely terrifying is I still think of him as this middle-aged curmudgeon, but I am now older than he was :p

I had never heard of that until recently, I met a guy who was having back surgery and was a professional drinker. The hospital gave him 2 beers a day.

I caught a slight buzz just breathing the air around him. He was amazingly functional though.

yeah, the hospital keeps beers at the pharmacy (and alcohol drips) for just such occasions. Withdrawal really, truly can kill you. Ativan should be OTC. Would help out a lot of things if a LOT of stuff was OTC.

I was reading that they are just now barely getting a handle on the etoh withdrawal risks.

I drink some beers from time to time, have excessively from time to time, but I never imagined what could happen to people withdrawing from alcohol, not just the DTs but actual death! I've just had the hangover or two.

It's sad.

Bri, how does ativan, an anti-anxiety, help with that? I know very little about the subject.

It's an anti-seizure med. Gave my father some megahallucinations, though (nuns are building a gift shop out in the hall at night).

stops the booze train to the brain and body, all the numbed nerves start firing up like a stripper at a convention. "The booze is gone! It's time to PLAYYYYYY!" and you get an overwrought brain hallucinate and an over-excited body has seizures. Any sedating med will help with that nastiness.

ativan, valium, xanax, hell, even ambien will help. Ativan is the best, though, for my money.
