He looks happy - open the door and walk away - see if he comes in on his own. He may be so excited to see you that he can't help himself.

man. wish I could get that pic to open up
also, let me commiserate on your whippet mix experience for a wee second: understand, esme is "beautiful" and "in shape" because she is probably, actually, a whippet and/or (oh jesus) italian grey hound mixed with pit. which is to say she is SKINNY. actually on a weight gain diet. this is very aesthetically pleasing. it also means she has...behavioral issues that are unique. understand. wonderful dog. sweet as pie. listens perfectly. unless she is chasing something or attempting to chase something to eat. then. well if you COULD catch up to her you'd be hard pressed to get her attention until she is done. there are not enough treats in the world to train her out of this. it's ingrained in sight hounds. also, for the record: i've tried treating her and praising her for coming/returning when called. 95% accuracy. inside, in a controlled situation. where there is NO OTHER FOOD OR HUNT. 0% accuracy in those situations. actually: wrestling her to the ground is the only thing that works in those situations. go figure. |

Hello daff0dil,
First things first, welcome to the cellar. Second, Esme *is* gorgeous. It's great that she's such a good dog in addition. Third, thanks for the company in my misery, I do love it. And Andy, of course. He'd just plain worn me out that night.

I wonder if Andy had a bad experience indoors as a puppy. How old was he when you got him? There are some things a dog never forgets. A friend had a chihuahua that was in a minor car crash as a pup. She'd rather die than come near a car, let alone ride in one. Even 5 yrs. later.

maybe he just doesn't like to be called Andy? Perhaps he wants to be a "Butch" or a "Sam"?

Esme is one of my favorite dogs ever. For some reason, Daffodil refuses to trade, even though I have offered ALL THREE of mine.

Thats awesome, V. I love Andy! I love the way he does laps.
I babysat my Mum's German Shorthaired Pointer when he was about 18mths old, silly as a wheel he was....he wouldnt jump in the back of a ute/car, no matter what, you would have to pick him up from about 50 metres away and carry him into the car - then he was fine. I just started making everything he thought was fun about the car, we'd play *chasey* with the other dogs and run and jump into the back of the car, big fussy pats in the back of the car, then finally - TREATS. Does Andy come in at all? I'd leave the door open at dinner time, put his bowl just inside the door, and walk away. Daffodil - Esme is beautiful |

Bosco is actually scared of the ferrets. He is actually really good with all animals, even cats, but ferrets dont really have any fear, and run up on him and freak him out.

He looks it, poor thing. His head is down in a passive position and his tail is between his legs. lol - They are both cute though...as is Dennis, of course.
