It was first mentioned here on page 67 by Deius Infectus (post 995; the song was ID'ed and lyrics written out in posts 992/1005.). The original homework on both spectrograph and covering song was done on the then-official TINP forums, sadly now (apparently) lost to time.

To be fair, the only reason I was able to pull up as much info today as I did was because I took three hours last night and reread this whole thread. I've been going to the current Madge page for several months now and completely missed that the song we've got now is the same one that appeared back in 2006.

So far the only other thing I've found on the new version is there's two different home pages, one at index.htm and one at index.html; .htm has a broken div in the markup (<div id="mainimg"<br />).

Also I'm not sure the new puzzle has anything more than this front page, but it's sure fun to be looking again.

Googling indiana "madge" (with the quotes) gives a lot of results about one person.

The context of it very much reminds me of researching the Zuiderzee.

KKK Scandal with a prominent man (He was the 'Grand Dragon' apparently). he ended up kidnapping and raping her and she poisoned herself. As she was dying she gave a court testimony about the event. The whole thing ended up basically destroying the KKK.

Decided to go back to the very basics of solving things and google words together. Maybe we are too used to the 'tricks' and difficulty that we have overlooked something obvious, and i dont Madge's identity mentioned anywhere else in this thread. ~

Based on what the (supposed) creator has been saying on the thisisnotporn.com Facebook page, the opening page is not meant to be solved.

The phrase "Please wait here." is probably just letting us know to wait until puzzles are actually posted.

I've been using the internet for 10+ years and I am SHOCKED that I have not heard of this whole thing until now. I will be spending some free time over the next couple days re-reading this thread and checking out the original puzzle.

Also, Madge apparently means "Child of Light". Maybe it's just a way of saying we can see the light... or something.

Anyways stoked to check out the forum, it looks like there's a nice little community here!

Just to add onto my previous madge theory, http://www.discogs.com/Aileen-Stanle...elease/3600048 was released in 1922 (same time as the madge link above happened.)

http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/detail/id/4964/
Looks like here's the original file used on the TINP page (it was obviously cleaned up and modified in protools but you can tell this is the one.)

even if we aren't supposed to figure it out yet, gonna write it down so i dont forgot. just in case.

edit: hello orthodoc!

edit2: slightly interesting, there is also a tinp.mp3 off the main page (in addition to the .wav that plays). Kind of odd that there is a 192 kbps mp3 that does nothing, but there is a wav file that plays instead. Either the wav was lossy transcoded or the mp3 is there for some (or no) reason. probably meaningless.

"Cherry Knowle is the first full-length by English punk band Leatherface. The album is named after Cherry Knowle mental hospital in Ryhope, Sunderland, and the albums cover reflects the hospital's Victorian origins."

the "Madge" InfinteIce supplied a link for was raped on a train.

"What began as a vicious rape on a night train from Indianapolis to Chicago ended with arrests of Indiana's governor and other high state officials. "

And Infinte, you mentioned the second page?!?!

Found this (it's a poem):

Her Name was Madge

Rum-balls and marzipan
announced her appearance
every Christmas
in those far-away tinselly days
when I was small.

Her name was Madge.
(the term spinster never suited a soul so well)
Stooped and bony,
she had long hair coiled up on top
and ankles that could have turned men's heads.
She grew lily of the valley
in her garden
‘on the west side with just a hint of the sun’.

She adored me.
Minded me often.
Reminded me
of the need for family.
(even though we weren’t really hers)

She lived alone in the big house.
Nursed both parents
into their graves, apparently.
Mum said ‘he’ had been a tyrant.
‘Drove away the only gentleman friend she ever had’.

Later she gave me recipes
penned in her perfect copperplate
‘It’s the J nib that makes the difference’.

I recall the story she told each year
about the only time I saw her with her hair down.
‘Madge… (she liked me to call her that)
You look just like a girl -
from the back.’

She died of cancer in the end.
Left all her money to her proper family -
the ones who never bothered with her.
