Would you name a child after a literary character? I did. Ripley is named after Lt. Ellen Ripley from Alien.

You mean it wasn't because jinx said, Believe It Or Not. Well it doesn't seem to have harmed her any, she turned out fine.

I wouldn't name a dog after anyone from Hunger Thrones and Games...but Ripley is a way cool name and she should be proud of it!

I just saw a thing that said since Breaking Bad came out, the popularity of the name Walter in the UK has quadrupled.

Hah! That's hilarious.

Names from films and tv are fine - as long as they don't sound stoopid.

Most of those new popular names sound fine ... Khaleesi though...

In the TV show Wilfred, there's a vacuous, passive-aggressive character who has named her son "Joffrey," clueless to the cultural baggage the name now carries. It's pretty funny.

Maverick is named after the most famous Maverick of all (in modern terms anyway). He loves it. Watches the movie every now and then to make himself feel like a hero. hahaha

Know a guy who named his son Draven, after the character from "The Crow".

our Hector was named after the Greek hero. Thor and Hebe were named after the god/goddess. but everyone* assumes Thor is named after the Marvel character -does that count?

*dumb enough to comment before thinking it through

I remember a very short-lived sitcom some years back. There was a stereotypical barbie doll blonde woman with a baby girl (as Caucasian as the mom) she named Oprah.

That's all I remember about it. It didn't last long.

Wiki quote:

Quote:
Winfrey was named "Orpah" after the biblical character in the Book of Ruth on her birth certificate, but people mispronounced it regularly and Oprah stuck.

My son went to school with a girl named Formica. We are big on family names and tradition. Since before the Napoleonic Wars, the oldest male of each generation is named Louis.

I have to admit I have always wanted to name a daughter Anastasia. I have loved that name since I studied Russian.
