Is he still alive? Does he have a website? Where are you finding the stuff?

Finding what stuff? His work? I only have one...but I'm definitely going to try to track down more. I have no clue if he's alive, and no website. In fact, there's so little info out there I'm finding it a little hard to believe. There must be some source somewhere. Let me know if you come across any info -I'll do the same.

I bought mine 25 years ago. An online search, when I was puting them in DoDads, only came up with an illustrated fishing book for that name.

Same here, but I'll bet he worked for a company or in academia maybe, which is why he's not coming up under PB. His skill must have been in use in some capacity - his stuff is clearly professional. And I saw samples of his fishing book illustrations...a little "brief" you might say...and the author references him as if he's well known in his field so I imagine there's some info out there.

The gallery I bought them from was owned by a friends father. The only thing he told me is Bates was from NY state. Now he's dead and the business gone so I can't backtrack.

Nice. Much different than most of mine. Is it numbered?

This one is 11/75. Seems PB had multiple styles and techniques. There's one on eBay right now (but I'm pretty sure it's a remarque - a later edition) that's really good but the sellers have it priced at $225. + 40. ship which is way out of range for an unknown. It does have a "best offer" option but what I would offer would be too embarrassing so I'm just watching it to see what happens. Take a look. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1

None of mine have that Pb mark, must be a later gimmick.

From a Google cached 2002 auction "Pearce Bates Wood Block Prints from Duncannon, PA area"........Hmmmm

That same print is up for a starting bid of $50.

Whoa...you're good. Now I'm going to have to go find out about Live Auctions (never done one). Could be a good deal! I contacted the seller of the one I linked here and asked about the Pb. He gave me some good information. I was misinformed (looking back and reconsidering the source, I should've known!) about remarques...they are usually small squares in the margin where the artist draws a detailed sketch, usually of one thing in the print, apparently to get a feel for or test the sharpness of the burr (etching tool). They raise the value of a print. The red Pb in the duck print is just his in-plate monogram... weird...I'm used to seeing them in either of the bottom corners, in black, where they blend in. I guess monogramming is random, maybe depends on the artist. There isn't one in my litho. I also just found a link to "art" definitions http://www.christcenteredmall.com/st...efinitions.htm - very strange source for that kind of info......but as long as the info's good, who cares.

I hi-jacked the thread, DanaC, and bored everyone away.

The dealer that sold mine said Bates was fro NY state but everything I see points to PA. The newest reference is illustrating a book published in 2001.
Pearce Bates may be a fictitious name though.
