Not sure how I feel about this idea.

When I first read the headline, I thought it was a stupid, cruel idea. But after reading the article, I'm not so sure.
Maybe it would be better to have these contestants participate on an already estblished show, but is this a start for acceptance or exploitation? The title for the show is disgustingly cruel.

Dutch shock at proposed dating show for 'visibly disfigured'
Last updated at 12:48pm on 24th January 2007

The Netherlands, the country that has pioneered reality shows like "Big Brother", is planning a new first - a dating programme for the visibly disfigured.

The broadcaster SBS 6 is seeking candidates for its "Love at Second Sight" show due to be launched in February.

"Do you have a visible serious handicap and are you looking for a partner?" says an appeal on its Web site.

"The programme is a platform for people with such problems to share experiences and feelings in a positive way with the rest of the Netherlands and to show that they are absolutely not pitiful," the broadcaster said.

"The main aim of the programme is to remove prejudice about these people, to create more acceptance and respect and, of course, to find the love of their lives."

But the majority of Dutch viewers are turned off by the show that was initially set to be called "Monster Love".

A poll by the mass circulation De Telegraaf daily showed 85 percent do not like the idea, with only 9 percent in favour.

Not any worse than the rest of reality TV.

Why is it acceptable to exploit the emotionally handicapped but not the physically handicapped?

God I love it when someone "goes for the jugular" of an issue like that, right off the bat, pow!

Funny you should mention that.

We were driving past the State Theater the other day and noticed that Blue Oyster Cult is playing there soon. They always seem to be playing that venue. Anyway, I was wondering what their shows are like now, in the post-SNL cowbell era. Do you think they sort of spoof themselves with a cowbell during Don't Fear the Reaper? Or do you think they play it straight? I'm almost tempted to buy a ticket just to see how they play that song now.

...but it is why I don't watch tv...
I haven't watched any network shows in more than 5 years. There are a few programs on cable that I try to catch;
Deadliest Catch (when it was on/new), Dirty Jobs (occasionally), What Not To Wear and Little People, Big World.
Everything else is movies. Or the computer. Damn the internet.

I can't watch that Idol show, the one guy is just too rude for me to stand.

What's the difference between that show and the humiliation of large people on shows like 'the biggest loser'?

It's just about ratings. Even if people find the idea offensive or offputting, I'll bet it rates well. If not, they'll just pull it. They don't really care about the idea. They just want the ad dollars.

If people are silly enough to go on shows like this, and people are silly enough to watch them, then that's the way it'll be.

It's a sad commentary on modern entertainment though (IMO).
