OMG, unsalted butter is the BEST. I could eat it with a wooden spoon.
I didn't start having it for health reasons, although I am really surprised it's not an option in hospital (if they can manage kosher meals, surely they can have a few pats of unsalted butter for patients on low-sodium regimes?!) I had it when I went to school in France at 15. It was the norm there. Is not a rubbish substitute, it has it's own distinctive flavour and is wonderful.
