April 21, 2009: Boni Good Art

Make that Boni's good art.
Mr. Randall D. Boni, wildlife sculpture artist, chainsaw in hand carves wildlife from logs.

We've seen chainsaw sculptures before, as a matter of fact I have one.
But most of the ones I've seen are upright, like a totem pole. Mr Boni's stuff is very different.

I'd say the way this stuff is carved, and with the stain/paint that he applies, it would be best to keep it out of the weather.
Too many places to catch and hold water, but it sure looks great.

Beautiful.
A friend of mine hag a huge chainsaw-carved eagle. In about two years it had split in two pieces. I think it would have lasted much longer had he kept some type of sealer on it.

I had to take a bunch of limbs off our trees last weekend to keep the raccoons out of our attic. I did not, however, carve anything out of the pieces.

Notice how he's using the nose of the chainsaw like a dremel tool? Chainsaw companies reeeealy don't want you to do that due to the possibility of kickback. So I give him extra credit for creating nice artwork and still having all his limbs.

yeah...that's nuts. If the top of that chain hits anything solid, that saw will fly right out of his hands. maybe land on his foot and shorten it....

I'm sure he's using an anti-kickback chain, probably sharpens them himself, that's why the sawdust is so fine. A normal chainsaw, sharpened for aggressive cutting, will make shavings instead of dust.

You don't actually EAT these. You burn them for coals to cook all the other things.

We have a chainsaw carving, and the guy we got it from said to keep linseed oil on it. It has darkened in the 10 years we've had it, but no splits or cracks.

Cocktail-party critics confronted with the idea of artificial intelligence often point to the stupidity of present computers, as if this proved something about the future. A future machine may wonder whether such critics exhibited genuine thought.
