A wedding poem

Ok...I've been working on this, on and off, for months, but most of this came together over the last four or five weeks. I said I'd write a poem for the two J's wedding next weekend (ohmigod it's so exciting! )

So here it is - subject to a little tinkering between now and then...

Well, it's an old, old story,
but it's newly told each time,
two friends, fellow travellers,
on the same road, they find,
their footsteps fall into a pace,
each to the other.

And they tell each other tales of their pasts,
and share their dreams for the future
And fingers interlaced,
they step forward together

And the road took them to,
strange and wonderful places,
and they had many great adventures
They found hope and change in America,
and giant clocks in Prague,*
There was the new range at Christmas,
and dog walks in the park

And their love deepened with the years
Her family became his,
His life entwined with hers.

And now, to him I say,
I have known you nearly all my days,
since we were just a pair of teens,
who thought that we were grown.
And to her I say,
You are the best friend I have ever made
in all the years since I left my home town.

I'm so happy you're both happy,
and I am pleased and proud to be here now,
amongst this crowd, of well wishers,
All who love you gathered,
to see you stand together,
and make your solemn vows.

There is beauty in the journey
that you've made, but the best is yet to come,
For the road that you have travelled
has brought you to this place
where you have built your happy home.

So, to the hand-fasting,
the promise and the wedding rings
Well, we'll borrow the bluest sky
that we can find and raise it high above,
and wish for you a long and happy life together,
kind and full of love.

* not really giant, it was an 'astronomical clock', and they had great fun with that notion
