History of New Hampshire, as I understand it, it went from 90% forest land to something like 30% by early last century. There were no trucks, so food sources for the big cities had to be closer. So people cut down all the trees and planted farms and pastures.

But then came "truck farming": grow the stuff where the soil is excellent, land is not rocky or hilly, and the sun shines all day, and ship that stuff to where the people are.

Those NH farms ^ didn't make sense any longer, and so they returned to being forest land.

So now, NH has returned to 89% forest (source) -- because it makes no sense to grow on that ^

Suddenly "local food" is a trend. Well, be careful what you wish for!
