Darned if an image search for "yurt" doesn't turn up the lattice as nearly universal.

Does anyone know what this thing is about, it's appeared as the symbol preceding the name of several websites I've visited for years.

Yes it shows up in Chrome, the same sites in IE show a little haloed e.
