"The normally polluted waters of the canals of Venice have become so clear that one can see the bottom."

We had a pic here a while back of a Venice canal at an extra low tide. Not a good idea to see the bottom of one!

Oh no!!! Without all of humanity on the streets, the poor pigeons ( and eventually, underneath, the rats) will starve.

Exactly, plenty of life on the streets, a whole food chain. Wait awhile and the bears and wolves will move in... or Tigers and Elephants... and Raptors.
