The game designer whose book I wrote is actually a Swiss citizen through his father. Living overseas (which he has all his life) is a valid exemption from service, but in college he deferred graduation for a year in order to take a specific programming job back at the family home in Switzerland. They wanted him to stay longer, but he had to come back to the States after one year because his exemption would have expired and he would have had to do the mandatory service, which he was not philosophically cut out for.
