To re-intellectualize the situation:
-Sex with Mom is no biggie
-Offspring with Mom is a serious biggie
-Church (the first large ingroup structure, religious preferrence irrelevant) says, "Ok, no more two headed children with gills and the same father/brother." follows that statement up with, "Ok, if you do, you're immortal soul (or other appropriate irreplaceable spiritual component) is damned/cursed/etc."

That should just about cover the valid reason for not doing it as well as the root of the ick factor.

Did I leave anything out?
