Air conditioning dies in my GTI... what now

Three weeks ago was the end of the car air conditioning season, but it was met in my car with the smell of Band-aids, followed by no A/C cooling at all. I'm assuming that the Band-aid smell was the freon replacement A/C coolant leaking into the passenger compartment and giving me cancer. The question is, should I address this now or wait until the first hot day of Spring? Do I need the compressor to work with the coolant in order for the defroster to work well?
