identity theft?
My husband told me I should get a copy of my credit report for myself to check just in case there are mistakes in it, etc.
I went along with it and lo and behold- accounts I didn't create. I have 2 collection accounts listed on my credit report- one from the local cable company for $265 and another one for $736 from a "Bank first" ALSO on my account are two addresses I never lived at- but my idiot ex boyfriend DID. He actually lived at those two addresses around the time of our breakup. The above accounts were opened in that same time frame. We were together for 2 1/2 years and he knew I used to keep my SS card in my wallet, so he had access to it, as well as my mother's maiden name and all of that other BS you need to get credit. Could he really be stupid enough to open accounts using his home address and my social security #?? And isn't that a HUGE crime? |

I know I'm going to appear smug here, but what the hell, I'll say it anyway: I've managed to make quite sure that no one would want to steal my identity!

I hope you can get that resolved. I have checked my credit history regularly since I got credit, and so nothing has happened so far (luckily). Good luck!

you'll have to file a report and sign a bunch of crap to straighten this out. from what i understand it's a long bumpy road.

Forget it. I called the cable company- they said it would be my word against his, as I could have got the cable for him as a "gift". I have no way of proving that I didn't sign up to pay for his cable bill. They don't require a signature or photo id of the person who starts the account.
(What kind of bullshit is that? all I have to do is find some poor innocent fuck's social security card and I can get free cable?? When they question it I'll say they signed me up as a gift? I wouldn't be held liable? WTF?? NOt that I'm the type of low life scum that would do that, but still...) Screw it. We'll keep the cable in my husband's name. I don't have the time or the patience to file a police report, take my ex to court, etc. |

You should though. This could come back to haunt you, like when you want to buy a house with your husband or even a car. Since they don't require a signature or photo ID, then they can't prove it was you that got the cable, ergo you shouldn't be held liable. You should be able to sue the cable company if they won't take that collection off your credit report. But lawyers are expensive, so I guess I don't blame you if you don't want to do it. I would be worried it would come back at me later. Collections are the worst on your credit it seems... (I don't really know, but that is the way the credit companies talk) Good luck anyway!

Stacey , DEFFENTLY get this UNFUCKED PRONTO !!!!!!! It may cost a few bucks but it will KICK your ASS in the future if you don't deal with it NOW !!!!!
Just imagen , in the future you and Asen want to buy a house , YOUR credit is FUCKED , so you guys put EVERYTHING in HIS name , you guys have problems and deside to split up , you WALK away with the clothes on your back ONLY , it doesn't matter if you made house payments , or car payments , its ALL in HIS name , and if he feels like being a dick he can get away with it because its ALL it HIS NAME !!! Thats what happened to my wife in her previous marrage , EVERY THING is in BOTH our names , JUST in case !!!

It's definitely going to be much cheaper to try to resolve this stuff now than it will at some point in the future when you're trying to deal with deadlines ... this kind of information could even damage your ability to rent a new apartment.
Honestly, it's way more important to your future than the fence.

Or even if he gets run over by a bus and it's all in his name. You get squat.
![]() Wait...you're married.....you do get squat, if the bus gets him. Nevermind.

And again we have a perfect example of why a national identity protection database is needed. One that accomplishes two necessary conditions:
1) you and only you can prove to others who you are and 2) you can confirm at any time that no one is using your identity. Driver's licences were never created for such purpose AND are so easily counterfeited that even some 11 September attackers had fake NJ licences. You are going to prove to someone you are who you claim by providing a social security number? Again, it was never created for that purpose AND that is only asking to have your identity stolen. Show me anything existing that even partially achieves both point 1 and point 2. Identity theft exists and will get worse when the people don't demand existing technology be made available. To corporations, identity theft is an acceptable risk of doing business - an acceptable cost. Therefore same must apply to you. Clearly no one is complaining. So identity theft is not a problem. |
