Thanks Mitch.
 We've actually been able to ascertain that the files are all where they should be, so we're thinking it's a software problem, probably in the operating system. The plan now is to dump everything onto a USB stick and then reformat the operating system. Hopefully this should save us some money and time. Once again, thanks very much for your help.
