A warning for the Brits down t'cellar

I was emailed a warning from a reputable source. Thought I'd share it with you, as it might be a scam running throughout the Uk, especially over the Christmas season:

Royal Mail postal scam

Quote:

Can you circulate this around especially as Xmas is fast approaching - it has been confirmed by Royal Mail.
The Trading Standards Office are making people aware of the following scam:

A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium rate number). DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize . If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £15 for the phone call.

If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 02072396655 or ICSTIS (the premium rate service regulator) at www.icstis.org.uk

I've had a few emails warning of this. I don't know if it's true or just another silly hoax/urban legend. Anyway, on priniciple I never call people back....probally the Scots blood in me.

Given the source, I suspect it's genuine. Worth being aware of at any rate.

Speaking of scams, is it me or has the 'phishing' rate gone up lately? I had no less than 5 in my emails today, warning that my account had been accessed from abroad etc...

well, it's definitely cyclic... go for weeks without any, and then like the buses...

I guess they're trying to earn their Christmas bonus.

According to snopes this was true, but the premium rate service removed access to the telephone lines last year when the scam was uncovered.

It's possible it's running again, so always worth checking smallprint on any cards you get through the door.

It is seasonal. I work at a bank, and we see a dramatic increase of fraud and phishing scams around the holiday season. People want that extra money for the holiday I guess.

After all, criminals have family too.

They just don't want to get things legally.

People are a lot busier, don't have time to check it out, plus don't want to take a chance on screwing up which would involve more hassle and time.
They learned from Mom, teachers, bosses, cops and bullies, the path of least resistance, do what you're told, is the easiest.

Not nearly the fun though.
