Regarding LJ's point, I had an idea...
People create their IotD threads and post them not to the forum, but to an automatic thread buffer program, which releases one thread per day, appropriately dated. This could also show how many threads were in storage, so if people saw it was low they could get to work. It's up the flagpole ... any salutes? gunfire?
