If you want a child to stop running by the pool, you don't yell "stop running!" You yell, "walk!" Just my thoughts on the matter.
Not sure how it would work with the example given, as 'stop' is a positive command, but the mind is slightly confused by the term 'don't'. If you tell someone "don't run", the mind hears two things: "don't run" and "run". Even though we use 'don't' to negate the command, the brain still hears the command 'run'.

There's a technical term for it, but I am damned if I can remember it. My brother studied as an NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) Counsellor. I wish I could remember in more detail how he described the brain's reading of such negations.
