Ammonia in Ground Beef

I've noticed that the ground beef in the plastic "chub" at Kroger smells faintly ammonia-ish. Actually I don't like any meat from Kroger anyway; I usually get it at IGA or a couple other local grocery stores with better stuff.

I've been planning to get a side of beef and some free-range poultry for the freezer, just have to clean out my garage so I can get to the freezer first! Planning to get it from a local farm, discovered through this site: http://www.eatwild.com/

If I absolutely must eat at McD's or etc., I usually get a salad or baked potato. Can't stand fast food burgers.
