But I don't do it just to land on the odd numbers! I do it because there is a precise volume level necessary for each media program to result in the appropriate decibel level in my living room, and one more volume unit is too damn loud.

I didn't make them. I don't remember any specific instructions anyway. I think you said something about the box of oatmeal, but we buy ours in a 50# sack. I was going to beat up some kid and take his oatmeal box camera, but since everything's gone digital, they don't do that anymore. They have iphone apps for oatmeal pinhole cameras.

There are plenty of superior methods for dealing with that extraneous decibel. Perhaps, and this is just off the top of my head, the signal could be attenuated by some type of acoustic baffle between your ears and the sound source? . . . Simply apply a little thought to your problem-solving!
