that morning it was 55 minutes. Normally, I allow 100 minutes. I usually get there on time.

I was so surprised when a city hove into view after all that greenery!
In Philip Larkin's "Here" (he wrote great journey poems) there's a line "Gathers to the surprise of a large town" - which it certainly did.

Am completely baffled by American road terms - freeway, expressway, turnpike etc - but am happy to be. I don't mind them being foreign.

The start of the drive reminded me of home. The woods and the hills are very close to my local geography. But you could not drive for so long without driving through villages or hitting a substantial town. I forget how much space y'll have out there. Even in Wales or Scotland (less densely populated) the roads are laid out to CONNECT towns and villages, so they're strung like pearls across your route.

You've increased my ambition to visit.
But apart from that, thanks for posting!

Seriously, though. You have my sympathy on that commute. I think there's some online universities that do podcasts. You should think about doing that. You could have your Phd by Christmas.

Nope, just a plain ol' FJ Cruiser. We see tumbleweed all the time, but that was a pretty big one so I thought it was worthy of a pic before I went around it.

It is pretty funny watching people new to the desert swerve around before slamming into them. After awhile you learn to drive right at it because it will be gone by the time you get there.

and, he lives in the more populated parts. Way Out West, where I live, there's a real whole lot of nothing. It's 42 miles/68 kilometers to the next major metropolitan area of any size, and the next one after that is 226 miles/364 km to the next city. Nothing but scrub, rock, and jackrabbits. Tumbleweeds aplenty, but not too many trees!
