The photographer has confirmed that the bison DID "out maneuver" the grizzly and escape - but to no avail. He had to be killed the very next day by the rangers, because his injuries from being burned, were too severe.

The reason the bison looks so "cooked" in the photo's, is that he had fallen into one of the hot springs in the area, and was badly burned before he got out.

the photographer said the Bison had been burned in one of the area's many hot SPOTS, not hot springs.
